RESUMO: Urbanization is rapidly creating new environments and generating new selective pressures on animal populations worldwide. In urban areas, animals need to cope with novel challenges such as non-natural predators, traffic, noise pollution and light pollution. Behavior is a crucial factor determining how animals interact with the new and rapidly evolving urban environment. Across different taxa, studies show differences in behavior, such as aggression and predator avoidance, between urban and rural conspecifics. A few of these studies found that behavioral differences exist in animals with limited experience of their natal environment, which suggests that the observed differences in behavior might result not only from phenotypic plasticity, but also from microevolution. To test whether urbanization influences the behavior of the lizard Tropidurus hispidus, we captured male lizards from rural and urban habitats in a tropical region. The lizards were kept in individual terraria and, after a period of acclimation, we conducted three repeated individual trials of each of the three behavioral tests. In these tests we assessed behavior tonic immobility, flight initiation distance and aggression. The lizards showed high individual consistency in tonic immobility, flight initiation distance and aggression behaviors. These behaviors did not seem to differ behavior between rural and urban individuals, and the tendency for a higher repeatability in rural individuals was not statistically significant behavior. Our study suggests the existence of individually consistent personality traits in T. hispidus.
