TITLE: Skyrmions – A Theory of Atomic Nuclei

ABSTRACT: Skyrme theory extends the strong nuclear forcefield, due to pions and other mesons, into the interior of protons and neutrons. These particles becomesolitons in the nonlinear pion field, known as Skyrmions. They have no sources,and are topologically stable. Skyrmion solutions are now known for many atomicmass numbers (baryon numbers B) and model a range of nuclei. It is necessary toquantize the Skyrmion's rotational motion to generate nuclear spin and isospin.Vibrations of Skyrmions lead to higher-energy states. Classical Skyrmions haveremarkable shapes and symmetries, and can be well approximated mathematicallyusing "rational maps".
